In short: yes you can! Good news – from the 1st July 2021, you can finally marry legally outside in England & Wales! This is brilliant news for outdoorsy couples wanting to legally get married and hold their entire wedding celebrations in the great outdoors! It still does not include unlicensed locations in Wales though. And so, for the time being, if you’re planning on eloping to Wales – you will still need to do the legal bit first and use a licensed venue like Penarth Fawr or a local register office. But, it’s definitely a much needed step in the right direction! And who knows – maybe it’ll open the doors for couples being given the total freedom to choose wherever the heck they want to legally marry in Wales, just like they can in Scotland & Ireland.
Are outdoor weddings legal in the UK?
From the 1st July 2021, outdoor civil weddings & partnerships will be legal in England & Wales. A change in law, which – can you believe it – hasn’t been updated since 1836, means that from next month your venue will be able to host the whole event anywhere outside, not just in an approved room or underneath a permanent structure. Just imagine the epic views you’d be enjoying while exchanging your vows outside at a super scenic Welsh wedding venue such as Llyn Gwynant Wedding Barn right in the heart of Snowdonia!!??
Can you get married in a garden in the UK?
Not legally, unfortunately. Although the hope is that allowing couples to legally marry outside in England and Wales will pave the way for this to be done in any garden, not just those attached to registered hotels and licensed wedding venues. It’ll give brides and grooms in Wales more options as to where they can legally marry and will also massively reduce the cost of a wedding, which – for many couples – has become way too expensive and unaffordable.
If you’re planning a small home wedding in Wales, you’d have to head off to the local register office first and then enlist the help of family members or a celebrant to create the ceremony of your dreams. Are you considering a small home wedding in Wales? Small outdoor weddings can help you keep costs down and a smaller guest list means you can totally focus on the most important things such as spending quality time with loved ones and giving your beautiful wedding day a more personal and romantic touch.
