The ultimate guide to getting the absolute best out of your outdoor portraits on your wedding day
Can’t wait to share your wedding pictures with the entire world but worried about how to nail outdoor couple portraits on your wedding day? Well, I know exactly what you’re going through! I’m assuming you’ve booked me because you’ve seen my professional wedding photography work and love it! So you’ve just got to trust me on this, it honestly only takes a few super simple steps for getting the absolute best out of your outdoor portraits.
All of the couples you’ve seen on my pictures started off in the exact same position you’re finding yourself in right now. We all worry about just how awkward we’re going to feel and look when we’re in front of the camera. And nobody more so than me – why do you think I prefer to be behind it?!
A guide to getting the absolute best out of your outdoor couple portraits
Book any of my wedding or elopement packages and you’ll discover that they all include a pre-wedding mini-adventure shoot in North Wales. That’s because meeting face to face before your actual wedding day and getting to experience first hand how I work really takes the pressure off both you and me! During your mini adventure pre-shoot you can tell me all about your worries and concerns and try to convince me that you really are as awkward in front of the camera as you think you are! I promise I really have heard it all before ;)
So let’s demystify the complicity of wedding day portraits in just a few simple steps; here’s my ultimate guide on how to nail outdoor couple portraits on your wedding day. Oh, and here’s what I forced my husband to do a couple of weeks ago just so that I can experience your pain and really know what I’m talking about.
We don’t like to pose.
Fair enough, I hear you. Posing has such negative connotations nowadays with so many photographers (me included!) highlighting their natural, documentary approach to wedding photography. Mention the word posed and I bet you want to run a mile! (Please don’t haha) Yet therein lies the secret to nailing your outdoor couple portraits – your photographer (me!) working their magic to getting you the epic natural-looking shots you crave!
We’re not really touchy-feely.
You’re not alone! You really don’t need to be all over each other to get some epic portraits and if you’re nervous about packing on the PDA – don’t be! I’ll be working hard thinking about what will work for you guys and cracking terribly lame jokes, even when asking you to give me your best moody face!
What if it rains?
Epic wedding day couple portraits and rain on your wedding day go together like copy & paste in my books! Do not worry about something you have absolutely no control over, just embrace it. Some of my absolute favourite outdoor couple portraits were shot in the rain and I’m always excited to deal with rain on any wedding day!
We don’t want to be away from our guests for long.
No need! In fact, sometimes we even get some nice stuff with your friends & families egging you on right behind me. All you gotta do is relax, smile a lot, run with it and wave to them. And hey presto, relaxed wedding portrait in the bag.
Can we go to one of our favourite spots for a quick pic?
Heck yeah!!! In fact, I encourage all of my couples to make the absolute most of their wedding day portraits and to schedule in some epic wedding day portrait time whenever possible. This doesn’t take long at all! Your pre-shoot gave us the opportunity to set up some super easy stuff that is easily recreated on your real wedding day and if we know what location you’d like to visit on your wedding day it’ll take next to no time at all to quickly create something stunning. Memories to treasure forever – priceless!
Can we add a bit of adventure to our wedding portraits?
You bet you can!! I’m always happy to incorporate mini adventures into my wedding photography so if you have something in mind that’s a little outside the box let’s definitely have a chat about your options! I’m game if you are!
We’d like some sunset shots!
Unfortunately, I can’t control the weather. But like most photographers, I am always keeping an eye out for some epic light. If there’s any chance of some nice sunset light I will absolutely tap you on the shoulder so that we can head out for a quick sunset pic!
Can we do something a little creative?
Absolutely! Let me know what tickles your fancy and I’ll let you know how we can incorporate that into your wedding day couple portraits.
Does having a super scenic venue help?
I work really hard to get the best out of every couple I work with and to me, it makes absolutely no difference what age, sex, size, shape or colour you are. Ultimately though it’s up to you to rock your pictures. Do NOT worry about what you look like on camera! Don’t worry about body hang-ups or physical imperfections – most of us aren’t models, fact. But the one thing we all have in common is emotions! You will get so caught up in the excitement and joy of your wedding day you will look naturally happy and into each other and all the things you worry about before your wedding day will just not matter at all.
