North Wales Elopement

Consider an elopement in Llangollen if you want to combine relaxed small wedding vibes with a generally slower pace of life, epic views and fewer tourists than you’d come across in its more famous cousin Snowdonia.

Actually, Llangollen was the location of choice for two rebellious Irish ladies who in the 18th century decided to elope and set up home right here in glorious North Wales. Now, I’m not suggesting you need to make Llangollen your home but as a local I can definitely confirm that Llangollen is an incredible hidden gem and just perfect for an elopement wedding!

Everything you need to know about eloping in Wales

You’ll find some great choices for where to stay in Llangollen for your romantic getaway wedding on Air BnB. Of course, there are plenty of super cosy log cabins and glamping sites in the area and it’s also a great UK wedding destination for the more adventurous. If you’re honeymoon’ing in Llangollen, go White Water Rafting, hike up Dinas Bran at sunset and take in the magnificient 360 views. Don’t forget to bring a picnic. And your dog! Hire a boat and cruise along the canal, grab a glass of locally brewed beer (or cider) and a bite to eat right by the side of the river or in The Sun‘s beer garden enjoying some incredible views!

George and Sarah had booked a cottage near Ruthin to stay in and moved to a canal boat the day after their elopement to go cruising along the Llangollen canal. They legally married at Ruthin registry office at midday and afterwards we headed back to Llangollen so that they could enjoy a picnic in the hills on a super sunny Spring day. They’d ordered a beautiful cake from the lovely Fran whom we met in the car park just before the ceremony (she was their second witness). Sara had found a seriously gorgeous vintage wedding dress on Etsy and had picked the flowers for her bouquet from their home garden – loved it! With hindsight – I’d probably pick a different route to drive up the hill as the super narrow rough tracks meant the cake took a bit of a beating on the way (urm, sorry Fran…).
