If you’re dreaming of a mountain elopement in Eryri [Snowdonia], but aren’t quite sure what a wedding day just for the two of you could look like, Anna & Mike’s story is a lovely place to start.
Every year, they travel from the Midlands to North Wales, spending time around Betws-y-Coed and hiking up Tryfan. Over the years, this part of Eryri (Snowdonia) had become somewhere really special to them. So when they started thinking about getting married, returning to the mountains they already loved felt like the obvious choice. They imagined it was going to be just the two of them, exchanging their own vows and rings overlooking Tryfan, followed by champagne and a few hours enjoying being outdoors together.
Choosing somewhere meaningful for their mountain elopement
When Anna first got in touch, she explained that they visited Betws-y-Coed every May or June and regularly hiked Tryfan. They knew they wanted the mountain to be part of their wedding day, but they didn’t necessarily want to get married at the summit. They were happy to be guided towards somewhere quieter, away from the busier walking routes, where they could exchange their vows with Tryfan in the background – such a lovely way to choose an elopement location. It doesn’t have to be the highest mountain or the most dramatic viewpoint. Sometimes the best place to get married is simply somewhere you already love spending time together. For Anna & Mike, having Tryfan overlooking their ceremony meant far more than reaching its summit.
An afternoon in the mountains of Eryri
We met in the afternoon, hoping to spend a few hours in the mountains and exchange their vows as the sun went down. But the Welsh weather had other ideas!
Luckily, Anna & Mike weren’t particularly bothered. They hadn’t come here for a perfect sunset or a particular photograph. They’d come because they wanted to spend their wedding day in a place that meant something to them. And that’s one of the things I love most about mountain elopements. When the experience matters more than having everything go exactly to plan, a change in the weather doesn’t have to spoil anything. With Tryfan rising above the landscape, they found their spot and got ready to exchange their vows.
A private, self-led elopement ceremony overlooking Tryfan
Anna & Mike chose to lead their own symbolic wedding ceremony. There was no celebrant, no audience and no formal order of events to follow. Mike had found a Lord of the Rings-inspired notebook containing the commitments they’d written for one another. A rather fitting little detail for two people getting married amongst the mountains of Eryri! Together, they read their words, exchanged rings and made their promises to one another. Afterwards, they opened a small bottle of champagne and spent some time simply enjoying being newly married, surrounded by the landscape they love. Nothing complicated. Just a really lovely afternoon together, doing something that mattered to them.
A wedding day just for two, followed by a celebration with family & friends
One of the nicest things about planning a just-us-two elopement in Snowdonia is having the freedom to spend your wedding day however you like. For Anna & Mike, that meant a few hours outdoors in their favourite place, with their private ceremony at the centre of it. There was no reception to rush back for, no guests waiting and no pressure to fit lots of wedding traditions into the afternoon. After spending some more time enjoying the mountains, we eventually made our way back down. And although they’d chosen to exchange their vows entirely on their own, they weren’t leaving their family and friends out of the celebrations.
A few weeks later, they got everyone together to celebrate. It’s something more couples are considering, especially when they love the idea of eloping but don’t want to miss out on celebrating with their favourite people.
You can have a wedding day that belongs entirely to the two of you, and another day to celebrate with everyone you love.
One doesn’t have to replace the other.

Can you legally get married on a mountain in Wales?
Funnily enough, when Anna first found my website, she was searching Google to find out whether you could legally get married on a mountain in Wales.
And it’s a question I hear quite often! The short answer is that you can’t currently have a legally binding marriage ceremony just anywhere on a mountain in Wales.
Legal weddings need to take place at an approved venue, such as a register office or licensed wedding venue, following the relevant marriage requirements.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t exchange your own vows somewhere beautiful in the mountains. Many couples choose to complete the legal paperwork separately and have a personal, symbolic ceremony outdoors instead. That might mean exchanging vows beside a lake, overlooking a mountain or somewhere that holds special memories for you. You can include your own vows, rings, readings or little traditions that mean something to you, with or without a celebrant.
And as Anna & Mike’s elopement shows, a self-led ceremony can be wonderfully personal.
Planning your own mountain elopement in Snowdonia
If you’re dreaming of a mountain elopement in Eryri, you don’t need to have everything worked out before getting in touch. Maybe you already have a favourite mountain, lake or walking route, just like Anna & Mike. Or perhaps you simply know that you’d love to spend your wedding day outdoors, somewhere beautiful and away from the usual wedding expectations. You don’t necessarily need to hike to a summit, either. There are plenty of lovely places in Snowdonia where you can enjoy mountain views without committing to a challenging walk. I help couples find suitable locations, work out the practical details and plan a relaxed wedding day around the things they genuinely enjoy doing together. Because the most important part isn’t finding somewhere pretty for photographs. It’s choosing somewhere you’d actually love to spend your wedding day.
If Anna & Mike’s story has you imagining something similar, I’d love to hear what you’re thinking.
